Crew socks, which reach above the ankle and just below the calf muscle, have been popular apparel since at least the 1940s. The most likely origin of the name is either due to their popularity among collegiate rowers (crews) or because they were issued clothing items for sailors and other military units. Either way, this workhorse of the sock world is the top choice for many athletes, walkers and even office workers. Originally all-cotton, crew socks more often use a blend of cotton, nylon and spandex for better fit. Look for crew socks that fit comfortably around the toes and heel without bunching up or shifting too easily. Seams around the toes should be flat so they don’t rub against the skin. Some cushioning should be built into the bottom of the sock, as well. Pay attention to sizing charts: For example, a standard women’s sock size of 9-11 fits a shoe size of 5-9.
