For this article, the testing lab tried out the Bissell ProHeat Carpet Cleaner in a home with a dog. This home has rugs in most rooms and carpets in the bedrooms. It looked at how the machine dealt with pet stains and how it performed overall.

It's sold as an alternative to renting a commercial carpet cleaner to clean your carpets yourself or getting your carpets cleaned professionally. It uses clean water and a cleaning solution to tackle dirt in your carpet before sucking up the dirty water into a separate tank. You can use it on fitted carpets, area rugs and even on upholstery, using the handheld attachment.

How to use the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Carpet Cleaner

It only takes around five minutes to initially set up this carpet cleaner on delivery. The included instructions are clear and easy to follow, so you shouldn't have any issues. Once it's assembled, you're ready to clean your carpets for the first time. 

Start by filling the clean water tank with warm water of up to 140 degrees. Fill it to the line marked on the tank, then add Bissell 2X Concentrated carpet cleaning solution according to the directions on the bottle. Next, replace the full tank and start cleaning. You can choose either the deep clean mode or the express clean mode.

Make two wet passes of each area of carpet you wish to clean, holding the trigger to release the mixture of water and cleaning solution. Follow this up with two dry passes, one forward and one backward, to remove the dirty water from the carpet. Once the dirty water tank is full, empty and replace it. You may need to do this during the cleaning process, depending on how much carpeting you have to clean.

At 17.5 pounds, it's under half the weight of commercial rental carpet cleaners, which can weigh close to 50 pounds. While you can find other home carpet cleaning machines of a similar weight, or occasionally lighter, this one seems to be reasonably lightweight considering its cleaning power. 

Cleans effectively

This Bissell carpet cleaner gets carpets exceptionally clean, even when dealing with pet stains and urine. While it wasn't tested side-by-side with a commercial carpet cleaner, it seems to do a comparable job. If you're looking for professional-level results, the deep clean mode gives you those. It certainly outperforms some home carpet cleaners, especially cheaper ones, but you can find some carpet cleaners of similar quality. 

Deep clean and express clean modes

You get to choose between either deep clean mode or express clean mode, which gives you more versatility than some carpet cleaners on the market. The deep clean mode is perfect for carpets that are already dirty and need some attention, while the express clean mode lets you keep on top of dirt between deep cleans. Since carpets dry significantly faster in express clean mode, it's a more practical option for regular cleaning.

Fairly heavy when full of water

Although it's light compared to other carpet cleaners available, especially commercial ones, it's still relatively heavy when the tank is filled with water. Some people might struggle to carry it up and down stairs. Of course, this is a problem with any carpet cleaning machine when it's full. 

Tank could be larger

The tank holds approximately 1 gallon of clean water, so it needs refilling roughly three to four times to clean an average living room in deep clean mode. Commercial models can have tanks of up to 4 gallons, which means you shouldn't need to refill them to clean a full room. However, most home carpet cleaners have tanks of similar sizes. 

Needs carpet cleaning solution

It doesn't come with carpet cleaning solution as standard, so make sure you either buy it in a bundle with a bottle of carpet cleaner or buy the solution separately. 

Should you get the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Carpet Cleaner?

If you have a pet and worry about the state of your carpets, the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Carpet Cleaner is a worthwhile investment. Bissell claims that it out-cleans the leading rental carpet cleaner, which is hard to quantify without side-by-side testing, but it does a great job deep-cleaning carpets.
