It's a little-known fact that Birkenstock invented the footbed — the unique shape of a shoe's sole where the foot is supported by a natural shape and the toes are protected by a raised ridge. This gives your foot a natural, correct position (with killer arch support) and creates the same rolling movement you get when you walk barefoot, which is why Birkenstocks are so dang comfortable. The footbed used to be exclusive to Birkenstocks, but today, you can find it on a lot of shoes without the Birkenstock price tag.
