A self-cleaning litter box seems extravagant until you actually live with one. Then, your cat exits the box, the cleaning cycle runs a few minutes later, the waste disappears into a closed compartment, and you no longer have to smell a freshly used litter box from across the room. Self-cleaning litter boxes are worth the money for the odor control alone. Not having to scoop anymore is just a bonus.

Before you drop the cash though, you should know that they don't eliminate litter box maintenance entirely. You still have to empty the waste bin, replace the litter and periodically clean the machine itself — which can be fairly involved.

For anyone who feels nervous about letting their cat use a motorized machine, Petlibro's litter box is reassuring, thanks to its comprehensive safety system that includes visual monitoring, weight detection and infrared motion sensors. If it detects a cat, the cleaning cycle immediately pauses. The camera also powers detailed tracking, including multi-cat recognition and AI analysis of waste, frequency and bathroom habits.
Pros: Our testers were impressed by how quiet this litter box is, as well as how easy it is to set up. Even the shipping carton was thoughtfully designed so we could get this very large contraption out of the box without wrestling with it.
Odor control is another plus. This litter box uses a built-in fan to continuously move air through a carbon deodorizer, and waste gets sealed inside a bin that can hold up to 14 days' worth for one cat. It has a spacious, open-top design that can accommodate cats up to 22 pounds, and it looks cool, with a sleek, modern design.
Cons: The cat detection system needs quite a lot of space — roughly 19 inches of clear area in front of the camera, and objects or movement too close to the front or sides could interfere with detection. That makes this litter box harder to tuck into a narrow bathroom, laundry room or any other cramped spot in a small home.
Another consideration: Several features, like AI waste analysis and video recording, require a subscription, which increases the ongoing cost of this investment.
Neakasa M1 Plus Open-Top Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box 11% OFF

For cats that don't want to climb into an enclosed globe, this litter box might be more appealing. Its open top leaves the litter area exposed and gives bigger cats considerably more freedom to turn around. It works for cats that weigh up to 33 pounds, and has a manual kitten mode so you can use it with small cats that don't meet the minimum weight threshold.
Pros: Compared to some of the bulkier self-cleaning litter boxes on the market, this one is easier to fit in small spaces. Our testers found its setup to be straightforward, and the large waste bin is a big plus, since it doesn't need frequent changes. Plus, the app will alert you via email if the waste bin needs to be changed, which is a nice touch for busy cat owners who might miss a push notification.
Cons: Our biggest frustration happened when the waste bin got full: The interior could then rotate into a position that effectively closed off the litter box and prevented cats from using it. The app also supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, not 5G, so if you only have 5G, you won't be able to set it up.
Reviewers note a few other cons: The gears are made from plastic, so they aren't as durable as some other models' parts. Plus, all the plastic construction tends to absorb smells over time.
Litter-Robot 4 Supply and Accessory Bundle

The Litter-Robot is the veteran in this category; it's been around for years, and it shows. I've had my Litter-Robot 4 since it was released in 2022. My cats took to it remarkably quickly, setup was easy and the enormous existing owner community makes troubleshooting less lonely when a cycling error appears. Whisker also has an extensive support library, readily available replacement parts and pretty responsive customer service.
Pros: You can use most litter types, and the Whisker app is pretty well built out at this point, allowing you to monitor litter and waste levels, activity and even your cat's weight. One of my favorite features is that this litter box doesn't depend on having an internet connection — it still cycles if it loses its connection or my Wi-Fi goes out. And the cat detection system is robust, using lasers and weight sensors to detect a cat and stop any motion for safety. Different Litter-Robot models come in multiple colors and sizes, so you can generally find one to fit most spaces and home aesthetics, which is a nice bonus.
Cons: It is one of the most expensive self-cleaning litter boxes on the market, and buying one doesn't mean you'll never scoop again. It needs to be deep cleaned regularly (I find mine works best if I deep clean it at least once a month), and the job is honestly pretty cumbersome. If you live in an apartment without outdoor space and a hose, like I do, washing and drying the large globe is especially awkward.
In the four years I've owned my Litter-Robot, I've also seen just about every cycling error it can get, and they aren't always easy to diagnose. Probably my biggest gripe, though, is with the soft rubber liner inside, which is simply no match for cat claws. It's not a matter of if it will tear — it's a matter of when. Thankfully, it's pretty easy to replace.

This self-cleaning litter box takes a different approach than the rotating machines above: Instead of separating clumps inside a globe, it uses a rake to clean waste out of a disposable tray of litter. After your cat uses the box, motion sensors tell it to start the cleaning process. It also uses crystal litter, which absorbs liquid instead of clumping.
Pros: This is our Best Bang for Your Buck pick — our testers thought it was high-quality, straightforward and capable of doing most of the unpleasant daily work for an affordable price. The crystal litter is 99% dust-free and doesn't stick to your cat's paws. Plus, the whole tray can just be removed and tossed, which makes cleanup a breeze.
It also includes a health counter that tracks how often the box is used, and there are multiple configurations that allow for front or top entry, so picky cats are covered.
Cons: It only works with crystal litter, which isn't the first pick of every cat or human. Plus, in testing, it didn't fully contain all odors like clumping litter does, although it still cuts down on smell compared to a traditional litter box.
We also found the tray to be a bit too shallow for some cats. And although PetSafe says their stainless steel rake is rust resistant, some reviewers said theirs rusted over time.
