For most of the U.S., this fall is projected to be warmer and drier than usual — in the Almanac's words, "Your trek to the pumpkin patch may be a bit steamy this year." Translation: Don't pack away your air conditioners and cooling sheets at the first sign of a breeze.
The western half of the country is expected to feel particularly toasty, with regions including the Atlantic Corridor, Southeast, Florida, Deep South, Heartland, Texas-Oklahoma, High Plains, Intermountain, Pacific Northwest, Pacific Southwest and Alaska all forecast to experience above-average temperatures. This means your September apple picking might involve more sunscreen than sweaters, and those cozy fall evenings on the porch might just have to wait. While some lucky folks in the Northeast, Appalachians, Lower Lakes, Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest might catch a break with cooler conditions, the majority of us are looking at an extended summer this year.
